Overview
Mobispace researcher Marc Montagut, PhD, was featured on Science View, the science program of NHK WORLD-JAPAN. In the segment, Marc demonstrated the "rose-petal effect" — the way a rose petal both repels and holds water through its microscopic surface structure — the same biomimetic principle behind the next-generation wearable sweat-sensor research he conducts in Professor Shinjiro Umezu's lab at Waseda University.
Reflecting on the inspiration, Marc recalled that in his rain-scarce hometown of Ibiza, Spain, dew would still collect on forest flowers each morning — an everyday observation that connects directly to the sweat-retention and self-cleaning behavior at the heart of the research.

Background
This feature builds on Marc Montagut's research into a self-cleaning sweat sensor inspired by the microstructures and wetting behavior of rose petals. By biomimetic micro-fabrication of the ion-selective membrane surface, the work achieves both sweat retention and self-cleaning, improving signal stability while broadening the potential for comfortable, everyday wearable health monitoring.
